If I am ever asked what helped me the most in my french learning journey, I will always say this book. It built my foundation and made everything very easy for me
I went from A0 to B1 advanced just by solving it's exercises

I highly recommend this book to those who are mainly interested in learning how to read and write French. In fact, for this particular purpose, it is far superior to another work: "Complete French: Teach Yourself" by Gaëlle Graham. For that book is designed for people who want to learn how to converse in French. I highly recommend this book to those who are mainly interested in learning how to read and write French. Not too bad, but there are much better ways of learning a language than old-fashioned textbooks. Look into Michel Thomas, Assimil, French for Reading and Listening-Reading. There is also a course called French in Action which I don't know in its entirety (it's supposed to be excellent for conversation), but which includes a fantastic 52-episode series that you should watch. This is a great book which provides clear grammar explanations and exercises and at the same times helps you build slowly your vocabulary and your reading comprehension.
However, I'm rather disappointed. I have set out to complete all of the beginner French books on my shelf. I finished this one and here are my thoughts.

The grammatical concepts were not easy to understand nor reproduce. The grammar lessons are all over the place you have beginner, intermediate and advanced all in one. Which is horrible, and can be daunting and discouraging.

The grammatical concepts were not easy to understand nor reproduce. The grammar lessons are all over the place you have beginner, intermediate and advanced all in one. Which is horrible, and can be daunting and discouraging.

The practice sessions were confusing. Sometimes I had no idea what the author was asking me to write or rather how many grammar concepts they wanted to see within a sentence. I had to actually look at the answers to understand the structure of what was required.

The author presented the exceptions and nuances for each grammatical concept but not in a concise easy to understand manner. Along those lines the author would presented several concepts and save the exercises for later. I think the exercises should have been under each concept and exception for better retention and a clear outline of what you are being asked to produce.

The author focuses on pretty intermediate-advanced subjects. Lots of emphasis on advanced pronouns and prepositions. Had this been done in a manner that facilitated understanding and mastery, I wouldn't have an issue but that's is not what you get with this book.

I have read the critique about the pronunciation guide. I personally do not think you can learn pronunciation by reading, so I read over the section but honestly ignore it.

The only thing I truly got out of this book was, pinpointing where my grammar problem areas were. I would have liked to actually master those grammar concepts instead of pinpointing them. Thus the book receives 2 stars.

Je pense que ce livre est bon pour débutant de langue Français. Il y a seize chapitres, où vous apprendrez l'indicatif est un peu aussi le subjonctif et le conditionnel.

For the first ten-ish chapters I tried to do all the exercises and write down each vocab word, but after I realized, personally for me doing every exercise isn't necessary. So I only did a handful from then on and just covered more material faster.

It's a good resource for learning introductory French grammar and vocabulary but if I were to restart, I would try to get the gist and try to take in other French media including books, shows, videos on YouTube etc. For that reason, I enjoyed the Reading Comprehension sections at the end of each chapter. They're easy enough to understand and actually addresses some interesting topics, including some social issues and other interesting topics.

Read almost 300 pages and did lots of exercises and still won't be able to carry on a conversation with anyone. The only part of the book that I loved were the reading exercises. I wish there were more in increasing level of difficulty.

Perfect book for those who forget the grammars they've learned. It's great reminder book. Just wanna say it would be nicer to have more exercises in, or an extra workbook. It is a great book for beginners! I highly recommend. I've been learning so much from it just in these past few weeks. I just wish it was still on the Language Lab app.

I recommend this book to all who want to learn French. I believe it is very complete, and has a fair amount of writing exercises. I've studied and reviewed this book for months now and it gave me the confidence I needed to resume my learning path. It is a lot of information so take your time with it - there are form tenses I'm still struggling with and think they could've been better approached. Even so, I am extremely pleased and am able to pinpoint every single subject I still need to work on. I recommend this book to all who want to learn French.
